The Stone Calculator is an online tool designed to help users estimate the quantity of stone material needed for a specific project, such as landscaping, construction, or masonry work. It calculates the volume, weight, and cost of the stone based on the dimensions and specifications provided by the user.
For square or rectangular surfaces:
\[ S = \frac{L \times W \times D}{27} \]
For circular or elliptical surfaces:
\[ S = \frac{\pi \times \left(\frac{L}{2}\right)^2 \times D}{27} \]

To consider the waste factor, we add the selected percentage to the total:
\[ S_T = S + \left(\frac{S \times \text{Waste Factor}}{100}\right) \]
To convert the volume to weight in tons, multiply by 1.5:
\[ \text{Weight (tons)} = S_T \times 1.5 \]
Let's say you have a patio of 15 feet by 11 feet, with a depth of 2 inches. Using the formula:
\[ S = \frac{15 \times 11 \times 0.167}{27} = 1.02 \]
So, we require about 1.02 cubic yards without considering the waste factor.
To consider a 10% waste factor, we add an additional 10% to our total:
\[ S_T = 1.02 + \left(\frac{1.02 \times 10}{100}\right) = 1.12 \]
And thus, the total amount of required crushed stone is about 1.12 cubic yards.
Multiplying the result by 1.5, we get the required weight of our crushed stone as 1.7 US tons.
It is important to work out the area coverage by multiplying the length by the width and then the depth of the area to cover. The depth is least important as we typically recommend a depth of 30-50mm coverage with all decorative aggregates, chippings, gravel, slates and pebbles.
A yard of any material will cover approximately 100 square feet at 3 inches of depth.
Multiply the length (L) in feet, by the width (W) in feet, by the height (H) in feet, and divide by 27. This number is how many cubic yards of crushed stone you need.
