For square or rectangular surfaces:
\[ S = \frac{L \times W \times D}{27} \]
For circular or elliptical surfaces:
\[ S = \frac{\pi \times \left(\frac{L}{2}\right)^2 \times D}{27} \]
Where:
To consider the waste factor, we add the selected percentage to the total:
\[ S_T = S + \left(\frac{S \times \text{Waste Factor}}{100}\right) \]
To convert the volume to weight in tons, multiply by 1.7:
\[ \text{Weight (tons)} = S_T \times 1.7 \]
Stone Size (inches) | Weight (tons per cubic yard) |
---|---|
1/4 | 1.40 |
1/2 | 1.45 |
3/4 | 1.50 |
1 | 1.55 |
1.25 | 1.60 |
1.5 | 1.65 |
1.75 | 1.68 |
2 | 1.70 |
Let's say you have a patio of 15 feet by 11 feet, with a depth of 2 inches. Using the formula:
\[ S = \frac{15 \times 11 \times 0.167}{27} = 1.02 \]
So, we require about 1.02 cubic yards without considering the waste factor.
To consider a 10% waste factor, we add an additional 10% to our total:
\[ S_T = 1.02 + \left(\frac{1.02 \times 10}{100}\right) = 1.12 \]
And thus, the total amount of required crushed stone is about 1.12 cubic yards.
Multiplying the result by 1.7, we get the required weight of our crushed stone as 1.90 US tons.
The Crushed Stone Formula helps you determine the total amount of crushed stone needed based on the length, width, and depth of the area to be covered. It is important for planning and purchasing the correct amount of stone for landscaping projects.
Stone Material | Tons per Cubic Yard |
---|---|
Crushed Stone 1/4" - 2" | 1.4 - 1.7 |
Crushed Stone 2" - 6" | 1.5 - 1.7 |
Cobblestones 4" - 8" | 1.3 - 1.6 |
Rip Rap 6" - 9" | 1.7 - 2 |
Lava Rock 3/8" - 2" | 0.65 - 0.9 |
Boulders | 1 - 1.5 |
Crushed stones come in various sizes, each suited for different applications. Below is a guide to standard crushed stone sizes and their typical uses:
Stone Size | Common Uses |
---|---|
Stone Dust | Concrete block fabrication, wall filling, hole patching, and smooth pavement construction. |
Up to 1/4" | Barns, ground fillers, horse stables, tennis courts, and walkways. |
Up to 1/2" | Mixed in asphalt and concrete for roads, water tank beddings, filtration, landscaping, and various environmental applications. |
Up to 3/4" | Bedding for large pipes, drainage systems, driveways, farm roads, French drains, path fillers, and slab bases. |
Up to 1" | Ideal for pavements, road bases, and jogging tracks. |
Up to 1 1/4" | Base material for driveways, rough terrain pads, and temporary paths for heavy-duty trucks at construction sites. |
Up to 2" | Drainage systems, dry wells, septic systems, and railroad tracks. |
Up to 4" | Drain outfall areas, heavy-duty haul roads, septic tanks, and slopes. |
